I just finished my time at Mr X Inc. doing storyboards for the next Resident Evil movie. That was great fun I tell ya. I’ve been told I cannot show any artwork from the film, so that’s too bad. It was my first real job on a live action film and I loved the experience.

Now I’m moving on to storyboarding on an animated feature for Bluesky through House of Cool. I’ll be working alongside two super talented friends and that will last for about 4 weeks and THEN FINALLY I will start working full time on my War Brother graphic novel which I need to deliver for July 11, 2012.

Now back to work on the War Brother script!

War Brothers

I’m going to adapt the novel War Brothers has a graphic novel. It is a honor for me to work with Sharon Mckay, who is an amazing writer, and Annick Press, a great publishing house. War Brothers is a fiction novel about the child soldiers situation in Uganda. It’s a great book about friendship and survival. It is directed at the high school age group.

I’ve started a separate blog for this project where I’ll post all my studies and process for my first Graphic Novel!!!!!!

New project

A writer who wrote a book with child soldiers as subject has contacted me to see if I was interested in illustrating the book in graphic novel form. There’s an editor interested. So we are going to do a proposal and submit that and see what happens. Here’s a study for this project.

Book and original art for sale

Starthrower in Haiti is finally in print. All net proceeds from the sales will go to Starthrower Foundation.

To place an order, e-mail me at danlafrance@sympatico.ca with your order and please write your complete address so I can calculate shipping cost, and make sure to write ‘book order’ in the subject line. Also available in French.

The book has a softcover and is staple stitched. Dimensions: 7×10 inches, 36 pages in full color.

Cost: $20 (CAN) plus shipping, with $8 from the sale of each book going to the fundraiser.

Because ordering the book online will add shipping cost to the total, I will sign your copy and draw a little sketch in the inside cover as a bonus.

I am also selling some of the original art from the book. The artwork is actually half a page of one of the original comic pages. The dimensions of the strips are 13×5 inches.

Cost : $40(CAN) per strip plus shipping, with the FULL $40 going to the fundraiser.

Here are the available strips you can choose from. First come, first serve. Only the first two stories were hand drawn on paper, the other stories were drawn digitally. So these are unique.

#1 to #3 are in pencils only. The others are pencils and inks.

Working in animation, I only get to draw simple cartoony drawings. I just found this amazing website called ‘The Interview Project’ and I got inspired to draw real faces. So here’s my first try. This is Sean from episode 113. It’s not that good, but my goal is to get better at these. This took me one hour. I did a first sketch on paper using charcoal, then scanned it and finished it in Photoshop.

And to answer Olivier`s question, here’s the original quick rough sketch I did in charcoal and ink. This was done really(really) fast since I new was going to finish it in Photoshop. The goal here was to create a nice texture layer…
